Cooperation Oppurtunities
In recent years, China has frequently through the organization of exhibitions, forums of commerce and other forms to promote bilateral trade. On September 1, 2008, one of a series of activities of seventeenth Urumqi Foreign Trade Fair was China and Turkey Business Forum in Xinjiang International Expo Center. Turkish government organized the participation of 92 national delegations, subscribed 84 booths, exhibitors of goods related to food, electronics, logistics, kitchenware, minerals and furniture industries which were the most to subscribe for the booth by country as a unit for foreign participant delegations of Urumqi Foreign Trade Fair in recent years.
Canton Fair is the longest history, the highest level, the largest scale, the most complete varieties, the largest attendance and business turnover of the best comprehensive international trade event in China, every year attracts a large number of Turkish companies participating in China. According to the statistics of China Foreign Trade Center, in 2010 the 107th Canton Fair, a total of 36 Turkish companies in the Pavilion exhibitors, participating buyers as 3726 people, an increase of 19% over the previous.
China and Turkey have a lot in common in the humanities, the natural landscape etc.,and have a long historic and cultural exchanges between the two countries. In China and Turkey joint efforts, bilateral cultural exchanges and cooperation ties has been continuously devloping. The two countries signed an agreement on cultural cooperation between the two governments, including cultural exchange programs, science, sports, education, journalism and other fields.
1. Strengthen Culture and Art Exchanges
In 1980 China and Turkey signed the first bilateral cultural exchange programs, cultural exchanges between the two countries was put on the right track. In 1993, the government of China and Turkey signed a cultural agreement in Turkey. Since then, bilateral cultural, educational, sports and science and technology exchanges and cooperation in the field of humanities is increasing.
During April 1996 to April 1997, Turkish photographic exhibition, Turkish apparel exhibition, Turkish exhibition of modern painting, Turkish Gunel couple photography and nail art exhibition, Turkish Gultekin photography exhibition, Turkish meerschaum art sculpture exhibition held in China in succession.
In October 2005, China Press and Publication Administration Deputy Director Wu Shulin visited Turkey. In November, at the invitation of the Chinese Ministry of Culture, the Turkish National Folk Song and Dance Ensemble group of 32 people attended the seventh Asia Arts Festival, and performed in Beijing, Foshan and Shanghai , and organized the activties of Turkish Culture Week. In recent years, China correspondent group, People Daily interview team, Chinese cultural celebrities delegations have visited Turkey one after another.
In November 2008, the Chinese Ministry of Culture sent artists to participate in Art Fair of Ankara, China was invited as guest of honor.
In 2010, large-scale cultural activities of” The Trip of China in Turkey”, cultural shows of Turkish Pavilion at the Expo and other activities have enhanced the mutual cognizing and understanding between the two peoples, and strengthened exchanges and dialogues between different civilizations. Shanghai World Expo, in the Cradle of Civilization as the theme of the Turkish National Pavilion, at “the Corridor of Memories” the symbol of silk cord of the Silk Road, hanging Chinese yin and yang calendar chart, Turkish calendar and exquisiteTurkish unearthed ceramics, presented for China and Turkey exchanges of a historical Picture to visitors, highlighting China and Turkey, the two countries with ancient civilizations in the historical and cultural aspects of the intersection.
In March 2010, China professional foreign media agency - China Foreign Languages Publishing and Distribution Administration donated books to Turkish International Strategic Research Organization. In September, cooperated with Turkish Digital Technology Group, published "China Today" in Turkish version for helping Turkish readers to understand China better.
On June 22, 2011, the director of China International Publishing Group(CIPG) Zhou Mingwei met with the president of the Turkish Chinese Friendship Foundation Hasan Capan and his party, the two sides signed a draft agreement on cooperation of China International Publishing Group(CIPG) and The Turkish Chinese Friendship Foundation. All agreed that China and Turkey in the overall background of the increasing enhanced economic, educational and cultural exchanges, both sides need to further strengthen the exchange of information and media, this cooperation met the demand of current situation and adapted to meet the future trends.
Cultural exchanges can communicate the hearts of people in depth, and touch the soul of each nation, which produces the effect can be deeply rooted in people hearts, and can not be replaced by the general economic activities and political communication. As Premier Wen Jiabao visited to Turkey before, he said that the people is the basis for bilateral friendship and cooperation, and culture is the strong bond of the communication of people.
2. Promote Language Education Cooperation
In recent years, China and Turkey language educational cooperation has made considerable progress.
In Turkey, not only some universities have set up Chinese language courses, but also the Turkish Ministry of Education has set Chinese language courses in public high schools. The activities of the “Chinese Bridge” competition in Turkish division was a great upsurge in learning of Chinese in Turkish universities. Turkish side is implementing five-year thousands of students projects including sending students to China. As of the end of 2010, through the China National Scholarship to study in China, total number of Turkish students were 1431 people.
On March 15, 2011 education delegation composed of 35 Chinese colleges and universities appeared in HIT International Education Show which was held in the Turkish capital Ankara. China's college education exhibition let Turkish students have a strong interest in going to China to study language and other professional.
In 2008 during the visting to Turkey, CPPCC Chairman Jia Qinglin attended to inaugural ceremony of Confucius Institute of the Middle East Technical University as Turkish first Confucius Institute in Turkish capital Ankara. In 2010, the Turkish second Confucius Institute at Bogazici University was established.
On March 25, 2011, Shanghai International Studies University announced to add Turkish professional. Previously, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Communication University of China has opened a Turkish professional.
3. Enhance Sharing of the Tourism Resource
On December 14, 2001 China and Turkey signed “The Chinese Citizens Travel Tours to Turkey Embodiment MOU”, Turkey became the tourist destination of Chinese citizens. Since then, every year the number of Turkish tourists to China and Chinese tourists to Turkey is increasing, in 2008 the number of Chinese tourists to Turkey amounted to more than 60,000.
In Istanbul, the classical Ottoman architecture – Sultan Ahmet Mosque (Blue Mosque), the brilliant Byzantine Empire architecture - underground crystal palace which impressed Chinese tourists. In Izmir, ancient ruins Efes (Ephesus) is well-preserved and most valuable ancient city in Turkey; in the Mediterranean coastal city of Antalya, the theater of ancient Roman ruins - Aspendos is also a must see palace for Chinese tourists.
In China, the Palace Museum, Badaling Great Wall, Summer Palace in Beijing, Terracotta Warriors in Xian, landscape of Guilin in Guangxi, classical gardens of Suzhou, West Lake of Hangzhou, the Potala Palace of Lhasa in Tibet, Urumqi International Bazaar in Xinjiang, etc. have great appeal for Turkish tourists especially Turkish students, businessmen in China.
Many cities of China and Turkey became sister cities with each other, Beijing and Ankara, Shanghai and Istanbul, established sister city ties more than 20 years, Anshan City and Bursa City, Anqing City and Kutahya City, Golmud City and Mardin City all have became sister cities in suceesion. Each sister cities strengthened trade, tourism exchanges.
4. Promote Exchange of Visits between Religious Groups
Chinese government has always respected and protected right to freedom of religious belief of Muslims and customs. Both sides agreed that the two countries should actively promote mutual visits and exchanges between the department of religious affairs and national religious groups, learn from each other, share experiences and strengthen cooperation. On February 17, 2011, in Turkish capital Ankara, the president of Chinese Islamic Association, Chen Guangyuan talked with Mehmet Gormez, the president of Turkish Religious Affairs Bureau. The two sides said that in the future will strengthen cooperation in the Islamic religious and cultural exchanges, education and training of personnel, publishing of religious books, pilgrimage and promote common development of the two religious undertakings.
On June 22, 2011, Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu met with the delegation of the Turkish Religious Affairs Bureau headed by Mehmet Gormez in Beijing. During the delegation's visit to China, the Religious Affairs of the two countries signed “Memorandum of Cooperation between the China National Bureau of Religious Affairs and the Turkish Religious Affairs”.
5. Strengthen Civil Interaction
Including the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries(CPAFFC) , Turkey and China Friendship Association, the Turkish Chinese Friendship Foundation, and other associations are non-governmental friendship organizations of the two countries, played an important role on the development of relations between China and Turkey.
China rapid development in economic and the ancient civilizations, attracting all kinds of foreign visitors including Turks. Some of Turks came to China for work, travel, and many of them came to China for study or for business, or even some of them got married with the Chinese people, and settled down in China.
There are also many Chinese people do business in Turkey (mainly are restaurants and shops), study, teach Chinese at the Confucius Institute, contract various projects. Some Chinese women got married wtih Turks who study or do business in China, and with her husband to Turkey. In recent years, the Chinese people to Turkey for short-term travel is increasing, most of them is to go sightseeing and visit the market.
Not only in Istanbul, but also even in the cities along the coast of the Black Sea where relatively few tourists go to, in there many Turks can say hello in Chinese, it is thus clear that they contact with many Chinese people.
